SUMMARY:Racist Trees
DESCRIPTION:Each month we present a film from a past Festival on the screen at Rocky Mountain Women’s Film office inside the Lincoln School. These screenings are free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $5. \nCut off from the glitz and glamor of Palm Springs\, and overshadowed by towering sixty-foot Tamarisk trees\, lies the historically Black Lawrence Crossley neighborhood. Allegedly planted by the City in the late 1950’s to line the 14th fairway of a City-owned golf course\, these trees have become the focal point of frustration and animosity for locals who see the trees as an enduring symbol of redlining. For decades\, residents have been forced to put up with the tangled overgrowth from a species so invasive\, they have been officially categorized as a pest by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Until now. Racist Trees\, a feature-length documentary\, investigates the timely story of racial conflict in an unlikely\, liberal pocket of America\, uncovering an even darker racist history that few would equate with the city’s progressive image. \nAn intimate\, sobering\, and at times humorous look at the intersection of local politics\, news media\, race\, class\, gentrification\, and social justice\, Racist Trees reveals a microcosm of racial tension that continues to percolate across the country today. \nDuration: 85 min. \n\nDoors open at 6pm\, Film begins at 6:30pm. \nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:Hanging by a Wire
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed director Mohammed Ali Naqvi’s (Netflix’s Turning Point\, Showtime’s Shame\, BBC’s The Accused: Damned or Devoted?) latest documentary feature\, Hanging By A Wire\, is the gripping true story of a daring cable car rescue that captivated the world. \nOn the morning of August 22\, 2023\, eight passengers — six of them schoolboys — board a makeshift cable car for what should be a routine commute to school in the mountains of northern Pakistan. Midway across a deep ravine\, two of the three supporting cables snap. The gondola lurches violently and comes to rest\, suspended more than 900 feet above the ground by a single damaged wire. \nWhat follows unfolds in real time over the course of one harrowing day — a survival ordeal shaped by uncertainty\, escalating danger\, and the relentless pressure of being watched. The rescue plays out live on national television and social media\, captured from every angle: panicked families on the ground\, military helicopters battling high winds\, first responders scrambling for solutions\, drones circling overhead\, and footage filmed from inside the cable car itself as hours pass and darkness approaches. \nWith no margin for error and a cable that could fail at any moment\, an unlikely alliance of rescuers must improvise under intense public scrutiny — racing against an invisible clock before disaster strikes live on television. \nDuration: 1h 18m \nDoors open at 6pm; Film starts at 7pm \nBuy Tickets

SUMMARY:Pick of the Litter
DESCRIPTION:Film in the Community\, a program of RMWF\, shares films monthly at locations around our city. Join us on June 16 in partnership with the Colorado Springs Senior Center. \nPick of the Litter follows a litter of puppies from the moment they’re born and begin their quest to become guide dogs for the blind. Cameras follow these pups through an intense two-year odyssey as they train to become dogs whose ultimate responsibility is to protect their blind partners from harm. Along the way\, these remarkable animals rely on a community of dedicated individuals who train them to do amazing\, life-changing things in the service of their human. The stakes are high and not every dog can make the cut. Only the best of the best. The pick of the litter. With deft storytelling skill\, directors Dana Nachman and Don Hardy (the two previously co-directed the feature docs The Human Experiment\, Witch Hunt\, and Love Hate Love) introduce us to a group of unique canine characters along with their human counterparts. Pick of the Litter is a wonderful reminder of the extraordinary relationships we have with our dogs\, especially those that we work beside each day. \nRegister to Attend

SUMMARY:The Day Iceland Stood Still
DESCRIPTION:Bring the magic to your living room with Virtual Film of the Month and stream The Day Iceland Stood Still\, the true story of one day that catapulted Iceland to the world’s superpower of gender equality\, anytime in June for just $10 — over half of the proceeds of each ticket supports the filmmaker. \nStay tuned after the film for a message from the director of the film. \nWhen almost all the women of Iceland walked off the job and out of their homes one fall morning in 1975 refusing to work\, cook\, or take care of the children\, they brought their country to its knees and catapulted the island nation to its status as one of the best places in the world today to be a woman. Told for the first time by the women themselves and timed for release in the lead-up to the strike’s 50th anniversary\, the story is subversive and unexpectedly funny. “We loved our male chauvinist pigs\,” recalls one of the activists\, “We just wanted to change them a little!” This is the true story of one day that changed everything. The Day Iceland Stood Still is a collaboration between U.S. director Pamela Hogan\, who campaigned as a high school student in the 1970s with her activist mother to pass the Equal Rights Amendment\, and Icelandic producer Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir\, who at the age of 7 accompanied her mother to that very strike in 1975 and thought that when she woke up the next morning “everything would be perfect.” The E.R.A. never passed in the U.S.\, and Iceland still isn’t perfect – but it’s the only country to have closed over 90% of its gender gap\, and committed to reaching full equality in the near future. There’s a famous saying: “The only thing new in the world is the history you do not know.” We hope this story will inspire viewers all over the world to reimagine the possible.

DESCRIPTION:Each month we present a film from a past Festival on the screen at Rocky Mountain Women’s Film office inside the Lincoln School. These screenings are free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $5. BYOB and a snack or simply show up for an inspirational evening! \n\nDolores Huerta is among the most important\, yet least known\, activists in American history. An equal partner in co-founding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez\, her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized. Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez\, becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century—and she continues the fight to this day\, at 87. SUMMARY:American Pachuco: The Legend of Luis Valdez
DESCRIPTION:An auteur emerges from America’s underclass: from migrant farmworker to revolutionary artist\, Luis Valdez changed American culture. In the 1960s\, his El Teatro Campesino performed on flatbed trucks and helped mobilize workers to win the first farmworker union contract. His “Zoot Suit” was the first Chicano play on Broadway. Despite critical rejection that killed the show\, he persevered\, creating “La Bamba”—a breakout blockbuster that authentically depicted Mexican-American life to the world. Now in its 60th year\, El Teatro continues to be a beacon for Latino/a creators. This is the story of an artist who gave voice to the overlooked and opened pathways for generations. \nDuration: 1h 32m \nDoors open at 6pm; Film starts at 7pm \nBuy Tickets

DESCRIPTION:Each month we present a film from a past Festival on the screen at Rocky Mountain Women’s Film office inside the Lincoln School. These screenings are free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $5. BYOB and a snack or simply show up for an inspirational evening! SUMMARY:Film of the Month – 399: Queen of the Tetons
DESCRIPTION:Bring the magic to your living room with Virtual Film of the Month and stream 399: QUEEN OF THE TETONS\, a stunning documentary about the world’s most famous grizzly bear\, anytime in April for just $10 — over half of the proceeds of each ticket supports the filmmaker. \nFor nearly two decades\, Grizzly #399 a fixture in Grand Teton National Park. Known only by her research number\, #399 has captivated photographers\, both professional and amateur\, since 2007\, becoming the most photographed and famous grizzly in the world. But more important than her photogenic nature is the large number of cubs\, 18 total\, she mothered over her lifetime. As the documentary opens\, hundreds have gathered\, awaiting her first appearance following winter hibernation. When she finally emerges from her den\, she is accompanied by an extremely rare four cub litter. But an uphill battle lies ahead: cubs face a 50% mortality rate in their first year\, and danger is everywhere. Crowds of photographers\, tourists\, and wildlife rangers watch as #399 teaches her young to swim\, scavenge\, and survive along the park’s roadsides. The bears’ proximity to humans offers protection against other predators\, including male grizzlies\, that are deterred by crowds\, but there is also an attendant risk of habituation—a loss of their natural fear response—which could have deadly consequences. Exploring issues around wildlife management\, environmentalism\, and eco-tourism\, 399: Queen of the Tetons offers a complex portrait of ursine-human relations\, as continuously in flux as the landscape binding them together. \nBuy a Ticket
