Alice and Serena\, her daughter and granddaughter\, explore how Maryla’s fight against intolerance can continue today\, in a world where survivors are disappearing\, and intolerance\, racism and antisemitism are on the rise.

In THE SPACE RACE\, directors Diego Hurtado de Mendoza and Lisa Cortés profile the pioneering Black pilots\, scientists\, and engineers who joined NASA to serve their country in space\, even as their country failed to achieve equality for them back on Earth. From 1963\, when the assassination of JFK thwarted Captain Ed Dwight’s quest to reach the moon\, to 2020\, when the echoes of the civil unrest sparked by the killing of George Floyd reached the International Space Station\, the story of African Americans at NASA is a tale of world events colliding with the aspirations of uncommon men. The bright dreams of Afrofuturism become reality in THE SPACE RACE\, turning science fiction into science fact and forever redefining what “the right stuff” looks like\, giving us new heroes to celebrate and a fresh history to explore.\nCaptain Ed Dwight\, the first African American astronaut candidate\, will conduct a Q&A after the film.

It’s connected her with family and been an outlet during hard times. Now in her golden years and struggling with loneliness\, she finds herself streaming jigsaw puzzles via Twitch. These strangers soon become friends\, and she finds herself at the center of a growing community. \nHOW TO SUE THE KLAN\nDirected by John Beder\nHow to Sue the Klan is the story of how five Black women from Chattanooga used legal ingenuity to take on the Ku Klux Klan in a historic 1982 civil case\, fighting to hold them accountable for their crimes and bring justice to their community. Their victory set a legal precedent that continues to inspire the ongoing fight against organized hate.\nTO MYSELF\, WITH LOVE: THE BESSIE STRINGFIELD STORY\nDirected by Diane Fredel-Weis\nThis is the first film about Black motorcycle trailblazer\, Bessie Stringfield. Stringfield was the first Black woman to ride a motorcycle across the United States – a feat she accomplished in 1930 at the age of 19 during the Jim Crow era. The short documentary includes never before seen or heard materials about Stringfield. Interviews with people that knew Bessie shed light on her extraordinary life. The 300 women of the Bessie Stringfield All-Female Ride show Stringfield’s impact today 30 years after her passing.

Their parents are in the grips of their own struggles to make a living and a home in a strange land. Mr. Jamshid is the charismatic\, fiery\, funny human with a Frisbee in hand\, who shows that love wins on the field\, off the field\, at home with family\, or boldly forging a new community\, in a new country – one kid\, chicken\, ultra-endurance race\, and friend at a time. \n \nBEARING WITNESS: A NAME & A VOICE\nDirected by Dina Rudick\n‘Bearing Witness: A Name & A Voice’ delves into the backstories and convictions of four extraordinary newspaper reporters. Their distinct personal narratives explain the profound motivations that fuel their work\, as well as the indelible stories that continue to resonate within them – revealing the who behind the who-what-when-where & why. The film challenges audiences to transcend the monolithic term “The Media” and instead see clearly individuals who propel it forward.

Mary pushes herself to greater and greater heights—culminating in her most hair-raising challenge: Attempting to become the first person ever to solo the grueling Baja 500 on a motorcycle. \nSTRONG GRANDMA\nDirected by Cecilia Brown & Winslow Crane-Murdoch\n95-year-old Catherine Kuehn is a world record winning deadlifter. As she prepares for her last competition she reflects on the love\, and the loss\, that brought her to this moment. \n \nFIRE TOWER\nDirected by Tova Krentzman\nHigh in the Rocky Mountains\, nestled in the boreal forest\, are solitary sentinels who survey the landscape as a critical first line of defence in wildfire detection. As North America grapples every year with the threat and devastation of such fires\, which is increasing due to climate change\, those who work the watchtowers with a bird’s-eye view sound the critical alarm that warns of impending danger. Like the occupations of lighthouse keeper or astronaut\, the remote locations and voluntary isolation that are part of the job—along with the very real risk of being struck by lightning—attract a unique kind of individual to this vocation.

DESCRIPTION:Potluck begins at 5:00 pm. All are welcome.\nFilm screening at 6:00 pm.\nKafi Dixon dreams of starting a land cooperative for women of color who have experienced trauma and disenfranchisement in the city of Boston. By day she drives a city bus; at night she studies the humanities in a tuition-free course. Her classmate Carl Chandler\, a community elder\, is the class’ intellectual leader.  White suburban filmmaker James Rutenbeck documents the students’ engagement with the humanities. He looks for transformations but is awakened to the violence\, racism\, and gentrification that threaten Kafi and Carl’s very place in the city. Troubled by his failure to bring the film together\, he enlists the pair as collaborators with a share in the film revenues. Five years on\, despite many obstacles\, Kafi and Carl arrive at surprising new places in their lives—and James does too.\nPresented in partnership with The Chinook Center.

Since that time\, we have grown to be more than a film festival\, hosting exciting events and screenings throughout the year. Funding from the Circle of Support allows Rocky Mountain Women’s Film to provide year-round programming.\nCircle of Support Members get access to private\, behind-the-scenes events\, early festival tickets\, and the knowledge that they are the reason we can create community through film and amplify the voices of women filmmakers. Ali\, a war survivor from Iraq\, is learning how to use a sewing machine after arriving in the United States just 90 days prior. Midwestern-born Barb’s genuine friendships with her immigrant co-workers belie her staunchly conservative beliefs. Football teams from England\, Argentina\, Mexico\, France\, Denmark and Italy are gathering at Mexico City’s sun-drenched Azteca Stadium. The scale of the tournament is monumental: lavish sponsorship\, extensive TV coverage\, merchandise on every street corner and crowds of over 100\,000 hollering fans turn this historic stadium into ‘a cauldron of noise and heat’ match after match. A fawning media treat the players like rock stars. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the greatest moments in international footballing history.\nBut this is a tournament unlike anything that’s happened before. The players on the pitch are all women. And it’s likely you’ve never even heard of it. This is Copa 71\, the unofficial Women’s World Cup. Dismissed by both FIFA and domestic football associations around the world\, this event has been entirely written out of history. Until now.

Her hyper self-awareness has produced drawings & sculpture that describe her state with powerful psychological precision. By examining her family history and a lifetime of her work\, we learn how art gave her a voice that saved her life.
