In the 1960s\, his El Teatro Campesino performed on flatbed trucks and helped mobilize workers to win the first farmworker union contract. His “Zoot Suit” was the first Chicano play on Broadway. Despite critical rejection that killed the show\, he persevered\, creating “La Bamba”—a breakout blockbuster that authentically depicted Mexican-American life to the world. Now in its 60th year\, El Teatro continues to be a beacon for Latino/a creators. These screenings are free and open to the public with a suggested donation of $5. BYOB and a snack or simply show up for an inspirational evening! \n\nDolores Huerta is among the most important\, yet least known\, activists in American history. An equal partner in co-founding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez\, her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized. Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez\, becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century—and she continues the fight to this day\, at 87. With intimate and unprecedented access to this intensely private mother to eleven\, the film reveals the raw\, personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change. Join us in partnership with Bear Creek Nature Center for a afternoon of two fantastic short films\, Undammed and Fire Tower. \nUndammed\nAfter witnessing a massive fish kill on her ancestral home waters\, Yurok tribal attorney Amy Bowers Cordalis dedicated her life to reversing the generations-long destruction wrought by the Klamath River dams. Undammed follows her journey to free the Klamath\, from testifying before Congress to passing down fishing traditions within her young family. Now that the Klamath dams are finally coming down\, she remains confident that the future of her tribe is bright. \nDuration: 14 min. \nFire Tower\nGazing from one hundred feet above the forest\, FIRE TOWER draws us into the lookouts’ world and invites us to contemplate how solitude can inspire a different connection with nature\, community and our creativity. \nDuration: 47 min. \n\nDoors Open at 12:30pm\, Film begins at 1:00pm.
