Dulcinea Harrison was born in Ethiopia without a left ventricle in her brain. Having been abandoned by her birth parents, she met her adoptive ones on a “special needs” list. Then residents of Grand Junction, Colorado, the Harrisons flew to Africa and returned Dulcie to Children’s Hospital in Denver, where surgeons corrected her condition.
Initially the only black child in their family, Dulcie encountered intense bullying. After adopting many more diverse family members, the Harrisons became full-time foster parents. Dulcie now attends the Haven School, loves sharing stories about her unique family, and aspires to become a professional filmmaker.
