Balancing the absurdity of small-town politics with the gravity of a constitutional crisis, Seized tells the story of the August 2023 police raids on the offices of the Marion County Record and the home of its editor Eric Meyer and his 98-year-old mother, Joan. Equal parts hilarious and horrifying, the film delves into the decades-long tensions that laid the groundwork for the raids and the remarkable pettiness that ultimately pushed those tensions over the top.
A day after the raids, Joan Meyer passed away from sudden cardiac arrest, dramatically escalating an already fraught situation and thrusting the town of 1,800 people into the international spotlight. The effect was swift and persistent, turning Eric Meyer into a hero amongst his journalistic peers and enraging many of the colorful characters in the community who felt Eric had long used the newspaper to push his own sensationalist agenda.
A year later, aspiring journalist and born-and-raised New Yorker Finn Hartnett comes to work for the paper, getting a front row seat to the ongoing drama that has engulfed the town. As legal battles over the raids intensify, Finn does his best to stay objective while trying to adjust to small-town life. As he wrestles with the age-old conflict of being part of the community that you are reporting on, it becomes clear that when people in power are blinded by animosity, the guardrails that are supposed to protect us can vanish in an instant.
