SYDNEY G. JAMES: HOW WE SEE US explores the creative process of visual artist/muralist Sydney G. James as she creates a new large-scale work on canvas, based upon her mother’s vintage family photograph. As work on her new painting progresses, Sydney’s interactions with family, fellow artists and community members reveal how personal experiences, current events and her hometown of Detroit have inspired and informed her work as a Black woman artist/activist who addresses the status of Black women in society, police brutality, family and community through bold brushstrokes and hues that evoke the complexities of Black reality, joy, pain, and resilience. The film bears witness to the way Sydney G. James transforms walls into creative spaces, provides opportunities for her fellow artists, and invites the public to celebrate, honor, imagine and reflect upon our communities, our realities and ourselves.
