Finding Our Voices

Finding Our Voices (18 min.) centers on Joyce Aubrey—survivor, artist, and advocate—who founded the organization of the same name after midlife flashbacks of childhood abuse upended her life. It was process painting that transformed her healing journey, and it is process painting she now offers to others.

Woven around a live art workshop, we follow Joyce and an ensemble of fellow survivors as they draw, collage, and play their way back to themselves. Alongside the work, they share where they’ve been, what they’ve endured, and how art is opening doors that words alone could not. At the heart of it all is a quieter search: for the child they once were, and what she still has to offer.

An intimate portrait of creativity as a path to healing, Finding Our Voices shows what becomes possible when survivors are finally given space to be heard, and reminds us that it is never too late to reclaim your own story.

Filmmaker Notes:

We did not go looking for this film. It found us. We met Joyce Aubrey, founder of the non-profit Finding Our Voices, at the Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival a few years ago and after hearing her story, we knew we had to tell it.

Finding Our Voices raised the funding in less than a month, which tells you everything about the community behind this project. Survivors, allies, and advocates who believed this story deserved to be seen.

From the beginning, we knew we did not want to make a film about trauma and pain. We wanted to make a film about hope, community, and the beauty that art provides. That has always been at the heart of how we tell stories. We are drawn to films that bring good into the world. Joyce and the Finding Our Voices community have brought so much of it. Our job was to point the spotlight at Joyce and the incredible women in this film and let them shine.

Sharing this film now at the festival responsible for bringing us all together is a a full circle moment we are incredibly grateful for.
