Tampons & Taxes: Or How to Play the Ole Boys Club and Win

Three Republicans arm in arm with an Independent and two Democrats is akin to seeing a unicorn in today’s hyper-partisan world. But that’s exactly what one finds in The South Carolina State Senate. They are the only six women in the 46-member body, and they call themselves The Sister Senators. In 2024, the Sister Senators take on South Carolina’s unfair menstrual products tax. While most medical products are tax free, menstrual products are not. In a state that is more than 50% women, the Sister Senators agree, this is an unfair tax on women. Then the Sister Senators learn there is a push to repeal taxes on golf club memberships. The women decide to use the ole boy tricks for themselves – and block the golf tax bill unless the menstrual products bill gets support. With humor and determination, TAMPONS & TAXES is a rousing look at the sexism built into the very fabric of American society.
