Animated Women- Lynn Smith: Method

Method explores the artistry and the creative outlook of Lynn Smith with an examination of the fascinating techniques she uses to create her work. In discussing clips from Sandburg’s Arithmetic, Smith describes the painstaking, under-the-camera process she used to make this charming film based on Carl Sandburg’s reading of his own poem, “Arithmetic.” For Pearl’s Diner, an engaging film about human nature and communication, Smith explains the process of combining paper cut-outs, collage and drawing to achieve her desired effect. This is an excellent introduction to the art of animation. Containing clips from her work and the complete Pearl’s Diner, this profile of Lynn Smith is an informative exploration of how the animator “does what she does” with her chosen medium.
