How are younger generations attempting to break toxic and unhealthy cycles of their parents and grand-parents? After serving several prison sentences, the filmmaker’s uncle attempts to reconcile with his sister and niece in a painful meditation on healing and forgiveness. Filmmaker Marissa Jackson directs GENERATIONAL CURSES as an occasion to reconnect family, give voice to generational traumas, and help open doors to courageous conversations and healing.
That her mom and her mom’s twin brother had become estranged over so many years and decades of traumatic events, enormous grief, and incarcerations, the film’s director brings her family together to listen, share and grieve. And by delicately encouraging each to share their stories, regrets and intentions, her work becomes a catalyst for reconciliation.
GENERATIONAL CURSES was produced in the Youth Documentary Academy (YDA) based on Colorado Springs, Colorado. YDA trains young people how to locate and transpose personal stories into high-caliber, high-impact documentaries that often open the door to courageous conversations.
