I Choose You

Abandoned on an Ethiopian church step with serious health complications, filmmaker Dulcinea Harrison traces her origin story from Addis Ababa to Colorado Springs, and in doing so, poses profound questions about family and adoption.

Born with encephalitis, Dulcie Harrison’s international adoption as an infant by American parents changed the course of her life. And theirs.

Inspired by her resilience and recovery, Dulcie’s mom and dad quit their jobs and become full-time parents, fostering nearly 70 children in the the space of 12 years.

How do you define family when your own defies every convention? With deeply personal and unvarnished testimonies, I CHOOSE YOU follows the unlikely journeys of individuals who, although separated by race, place and abilities, help us understand that the things dividing us mean much less that those bringing us together.

I CHOOSE YOU was produced in the Youth Documentary Academy (YDA), based in Colorado Springs. YDA trains young people how to locate and transpose their own stories into high-impact, high-caliber documentary films that often open the door to courageous conversations.
